Residents are displaced after a fire in Tilbury Friday evening.

Fire crews from six Chatham-Kent Fire Rescue stations responded to a structure fire downtown on Queen Street North just before 7 p.m.

CK Fire said there were 18 pieces of equipment and 58 firefighters called to the scene. Alongside Chatham fire crews there were firefighters from Raleigh North, Merlin, Tilbury and Wheatley.

"When [firefighters] arrived they encountered heavy flames and turbulent black smoke to the second storey," said Chief Dan Parent. The building has businesses occupy the first storey with apartments on the second-storey.

Parent said the occupants of the apartments were able to get out and the businesses were not open and there was no one inside. No injuries were reported.
